International Islamic University Malaysia
The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is a public university established on May 23, 1983, with its headquarters in Gombak, Selangor, Malaysia. It has six other campuses in different locations throughout the country, including two medical campuses, a Centre for Foundation Studies, two city campuses in Kuala Lumpur, and a language and tourism campus in Johor.
Sponsored by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and eight governments, IIUM is founded upon Islamic principles, with Islamic values integrated into all courses offered at its 14 faculties or “Kulliyyah”. The university has produced more than 70,000 graduates and undergraduates from over 100 countries worldwide, most of whom are Malaysians.
IIUM was originally conceived by former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in 1982 during a meeting between OIC leaders about the Islamization of knowledge. The university was initially incorporated under the Companies Act 1965 as a private institution as the language of instruction was not to be Malay, but instead, English and Arabic, which was prohibited by Malaysian law at the time. However, on May 23, 1983, IIUM was officially established as a public university when it received its establishment order from the then King, Ahmad Shah of Pahang, after an exchange of diplomatic notes of co-sponsorship between the government of Malaysia, seven other governments, and OIC.
As a federal statutory body, IIUM operates under the supervision of a board of governors chaired by a president appointed by the constitutional head. The university’s ceremonial head, the constitutional head, presides over convocations and serves as the point of reference for all constitutional issues. Ahmad Shah of Pahang was the founding constitutional head, and after his death, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah replaced him in 2019. The board of governors is assisted by a senate and a management committee, which are chaired by a rector appointed by the constitutional head on the advice of the federal government.
