Multimedia University – MMU
Multimedia University (MMU) is a research university owned by Telekom Malaysia and the first ever full-fledged private university in Malaysia. Established in 1997, it is a young medium university with a concentration in technology and multimedia disciplines. MMU has three campuses located in Cyberjaya, Malacca, and Iskandar Puteri. The university offers programmes across ten faculties, including Computing and Informatics, Business and Management, Engineering and Technology, Creative Multimedia and Cinematic Arts, and more.
In 1994, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) established the Institute of Telecommunication and Information Technology (ITTM) in Taiping, Perak. With the academic success of the first two batches of students, TM was invited by the Ministry of Education to set up the first private university in Malaysia. ITTM was granted university status and renamed itself to Universiti Telekom. Later, the Malacca campus was set up in the Ayer Keroh town, followed by the Cyberjaya campus, which was opened on 8 July 1999. The relationship between the Cyberjaya campus and the MSC is intended to be similar to the relationship between Stanford University and Silicon Valley. The university changed its name from Universiti Telekom to Multimedia University.
MMU has received many recognitions and achievements. The Malaysian government, through the Malaysian Qualifications Agency under the Ministry of Higher Education, has granted MMU Self-Accreditation status, formally acknowledging that the university is a trustworthy institution whose programmes continuously meet or exceed strict specifications. In addition, MMU has been accorded the status of a Premier Digital Tech University by the Malaysian government, via MoHE. As a result of the university growing from strength to strength, the MMU brand has grown in prominence.
MMU offers programmes across ten faculties. The Faculty of Computing and Informatics, which was split from the Faculty of Information Technology, offers undergraduate programmes with majors in data communications and networking, security technology, artificial intelligence, business intelligence and analytics, and bioinformatics.
