Swinburne University of Technology

Swinburne University of Technology, also known as Swinburne, is a public research university based in Melbourne, Australia. It was founded in 1908 as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College by George Swinburne to provide further education opportunities to Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. Today, its main campus is in Hawthorn, which is 7.5 km from the Melbourne central business district.

In addition to the Hawthorn campus, Swinburne has campuses in Wantirna and Croydon in the Melbourne metropolitan area, as well as in Sarawak, Malaysia and Sydney, Australia.

Swinburne has a strong reputation for providing an excellent education experience to its students. In the 2020 Student Experience Survey, Swinburne was ranked equal first in Victoria for the “entire education experience” for undergraduate students, with an overall satisfaction rate of 80%.

Swinburne began as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College in Hawthorn and changed its name to Swinburne Technical College in 1913. It later became the Swinburne Institute of Technology and then Swinburne University of Technology in 1992 with the passage of the Swinburne University of Technology Act.

The university has a rich history of growth and expansion, with new campuses established in Mooroolbark (later renamed Lilydale), Croydon, and Wantirna. It has also established partnerships with various organizations to enhance its offerings, such as the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) in 1999 and the Leo Cussen Centre for Law in 2015.

Swinburne’s Hawthorn campus is the main campus, hosting vocational, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs. Wantirna is a TAFE-specific campus, while Croydon focuses on training in trades such as building, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing. The Sarawak campus in Malaysia offers programs in engineering, science, computing, and business, among others. The former Prahran campus is now home to NICA.
