Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a public research university that was founded on 1 June 1969 in Penang, Malaysia. It is one of the oldest institutes of higher education in Northern Malaysia, with three campuses: a main campus in Penang, a health campus in Kelantan, and an engineering campus in Nibong Tebal. The university has a current enrollment of around 28,300 postgraduate and undergraduate students, and employs around 1,479 lecturers, leading to a student-lecturer ratio of approximately 19:1.
USM offers courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in a wide range of disciplines, including Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Building Science and Technology, Social Sciences, Humanities and Education. In addition to its campuses in Malaysia, USM also has an overseas collaboration with KLE University in India offering the Doctor of Medicine (USM) undergraduate degree. The university also plans to open a Global Campus (Kuala Lumpur Campus) in Kuala Lumpur Education City (KLCE).
USM is the only government-funded autonomous university in Malaysia to receive the Accelerated Programs for Excellence (APEX) status. This fast track development programme was created to enable institutions of higher education to be recognised as world-class entities. The USM coat of arms features a crescent moon and a fourteen-pointed federal star, two tigers holding palm fronds, a shield, and a motto. The university’s motto, “Kami Memimpin,” translates to “We Lead” in English.
